What a season Cole Palmer is having at Chelsea. The 21-year-old who completed a transfer from Man City last summer has established himself as a regular starter for Chelsea. He has become an important player for the club with both players and fans starting to look up to him to help pull the club out of bad situations and he has been doing that pretty well. This season, he has scored a lot of important goals to help Chelsea win important matches or hold opponents to a draw. Earlier in the season he scored a last minute penalty against his former club in a 4-4 thriller to make sure Chelsea went home with a point. Just last week, he scored a hat trick against Manchester United with two of the goals coming in added time to help Chelsea beat the Red Devils for the first time since 2018. The match ended in a 4-3 win for Chelsea securing them a very important three points and Palmer deservedly went home with the match ball.
Cole Palmer has 33 goal contributions across all competitions for Chelsea so far this season; the best debut season for Chelsea since Eden Hazard in the 2012/2013 season. He already has 25 goal contributions in 26 Premier League appearances; 16 goals and 9 assists and while Chelsea are not in the best position on the table, they’d probably be much lower without Palmer. Week in, week out, Palmer is consistently delivering great performances for the club and at this point, it’s safe to say he is the team’s star player.

Palmer may not be the best player in the Premier League this season when compared to the likes of Erling Haaland, Kevin DeBryune, Mohammed Salah and even Ollie Watkins who is having an amazing season at Aston Villa but he certainly is in the conversation.

When it comes to the best young player in the Premier League and in the world, a strong case could be made for Palmer. In the Premier League currently, only players like Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Man City’s Phil Foden who is also having an phenomenal season can contend with his performance and challenge him for the best young player in the Premier League this season. So far in this season’s Premier League, Phil Foden has 14 Premier League goals and seven assists in 30 appearances for Man City while Bukayo Saka has 14 goals and eight assists for Arsenal.

If one extends the scope to include all of Europe, Palmer would still definitely be in the conversation. The only thing that hurts his case is Chelsea’s low position (ninth) in the Premier League and the absence of European football for the young lad. His numbers are still up there even though he is not playing in the UEFA competitions; Champions League and Europa. If he was playing in any of these international competitions, he would have scored more and it would boost his numbers and probably put him clear of Foden and Saka who are both having a great performance in the Champions League.

Is Cole Palmer the best English player in the Premier League this season? Arsenal fan Robbie from AFTV certainly thinks so, and we don’t think he is completely off the mark. Palmer has been sensational so far this season and even if one doesn’t think he’s the best English player this season, one would still be hard pressed to say he does not have a strong case to be.
