A first-half brace by Victor Osimhen has given Nigeria a crucial 2-0 win over Rwanda in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match played in Kigali on Friday night.
In what is Eric Chelle’s debut as Super Eagles Head Coach, Nigeria went into the encounter in search of a first win in the qualifying series after three draws and a loss in the opening four matches.
The visitors wasted little time to make their intent known when Osimhen met a free kick by Ademola Lookman with a first time shot at the near post to put Nigeria in front after 10 minutes.
Osimhen made it 2-0 with his 25th international goal, latching on to a headed pass in midfield and bearing down on the Rwanda area before dinking over the goalkeeper to score.
The result sees Nigeria remain in fourth with six points after five games played, a point behind third-placed Rwanda, two points behind Benin Republic and four points behind group leaders South Africa.
Next up for Chelle and the Super Eagles is a match against bottom team, Zimbabwe, next Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
