Four-time champions, Rivers United, remain unbeaten and return to the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League standings on Thursday following a 2-0 win over Shooting Stars in Port Harcourt.

The home side got off to the wrong start after fumbling a chance to take an early lead in the match no thanks to a missed penalty, as the first half at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium ended goalless.

Rivers United made sure to not squander an early chance to take the lead in the second half as Aniekeme Okon scored six minutes after the restart.

United leapfrog Remo Stars after the Ikenne club fell to a 3-1 loss to Plateau United in Jos on Thursday. After starting the season with four straight wins, Daniel Ogunmodede’s side have now lost two of their last three league matches.

Elsewhere in the league on Thursday, Bendel Insurance eased to a 3-0 win over Bayelsa United, Ikorodu City came away from Owerri with a point in the 1-1 draw with Heartland, and Katsina United edged Akwa United by a lone goal.
