Ange Postecoglu has been relieved of his job as Tottenham Hotspur head coach on Friday, June 6, just two weeks after leading the North London club to the UEFA Europa League title with a 1-0 win over Manchester United at the San Mames in Bilbao.
Spurs confirmed the decision with a brief statement. “Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties,” the club wrote in the statement.
The Australian was appointed Spurs boss exactly two years ago on June 6, 2023 on a four-year contract and his reign got off to a brilliant start as two wins and a draw in August 2023 saw him win the Premier League Manager of the Month award.
He followed that up with a draw against Arsenal and a first Spurs win over Liverpool in five years, with Postecoglu breaking the Spurs record for most points earned by a Premier League manager in their first nine games with 23 points.
Postecoglou’s Spurs eventually finished fifth with 66 points in his first season, helping them earn a place in the Europa League, which he would go on to win, making good on his claim that he always wins a trophy in his second season with a club.
Despite the title win, which qualified the Lilywhites for next season’s UEFA Champions League, Spurs endured a torrid campaign and finished 17th in the Premier League with just 38 points and 22 games lost – only the trio of relegated teams lost more.
Spurs have decided to move on from the Australian and are expected to make a decision on his replacement next week, according to The Athletic. Brentford boss, Thomas Frank, is a leading contender to take over the vacant role.
Frank is highly rated in the Premier League, having guided the Bees from the Championship to the top-flight, leading them to a top-half finish in the 2024-25 campaign and contesting for European football until the final day of the season.
