TOP FIVE MOST SUCCESSFUL CLUBS IN THE EUROPA LEAGUE

The Europa League is the second-tier UEFA European competition right behind the UEFA Champions League. Previously called the UEFA Cup, the competition was re-branded as the Europa League in 2010. Most football fans know the most dominant team in the UCL and how successful other teams have been in UEFA’s premier competition but the Europa League, not so much. We know you didn’t ask but we have compiled a list of the most successful clubs in the UEL. You’re welcome.

SEVILLA (7)

Sitting at the top of the hill is the Spanish club Sevilla. They’re the most successful team in the Europa League having won a whooping seven Europa League titles making them the undisputed kings of the competition. Just like their Spanish counterparts Real Madrid, Sevilla threepeated the Europa League in 2014,2015 and 2016. They won their seventh trophy in the 2022/2023 season last year by beating Jose Mourinho’s Roma 4-1 on penalties in Budapest.

Four clubs are tied for second place with each having three Europa League titles each.

LIVERPOOL (3)

The Reds won the Europa League in 2001, 1973 and 1976, making them the most successful English club in the competition. They have participated in the competition 12 times since its inception. Liverpool won their last Europa League title by a golden goal against Alaves in 2001 to conclude a nine-goal thriller that ended 5-4. Will Liverpool be adding a fourth this season?

JUVENTUS (3)

The Italian giants also have three Europa League titles in their cabinet to tie with Inter Milan as the most successful Italian club in the competition. They won the competition in 1977, 1990 and 1993. Their last Europa League triumph came against German club Borussia Dortmund when the competition final was played over two legs. Juventus defeated Dortmund in both legs 3-1 and 3-0 to win by a record aggregate score of 6-1.

INTER MILAN (3)

Inter has won the Europa League three times in the years 1991,1994 and 1998. The 1998 UEFA Cup (Europa League) final was an all-Italian affair as Inter Milan squared off against Lazio at the Parc des Princes in Paris. Inter Milan won 3-0 in what was the first single-legged final of the competition’s history.

ATLETICO MADRID (3)

The Spanish giants won the first edition of the Europa League after it was rebranded from the UEFA Cup in 2010. They beat English side Fulham 2-1 in additional extra time. The Colchoneros won the competition again in 2012 and most recently in 2018 against French side Marseille. They beat Marseille 3-0 to claim their third trophy at the Groupama stadium in Lyon, France.
