Three Players to Blame for Manchester United’s Loss to Man. City in 2024 Community Shield

Manchester United failed to begin the season on a good note, losing to their city rivals Manchester City in the Community Shield on Saturday afternoon.

Erik Ten Hag’s side became the first to lose 10 Community Shield games, a record City would have owned if they had lost this edition. The Premier League champions had lost nine previous Community Shield matches – including the last three in a row.

The Red Devils lost on penalties after the game ended 1-1 in 90 minutes. Alejandro Ganarcho scored for Erik Ten Hag’s side, while Bernardo Silva found the back of the net for the Cityzens.

These are the players to blame for Man Utd’s loss…

Marcus Rashford

The England international performed poorly in the game. He started as a left winger but failed to trouble Manchester City’s youngster Rico Lewis, who played the right-back position in Kyle Walker’s absence.

He was later moved to the centre-forward position in the second half and lost a glorious chance that could have given the Red Devils the win.

Manager Erik Ten Hag later substituted him for Jadon Sancho, who missed from the spot during the ensuing penalty shootout.

Jonny Evans

The former Leicester City defender had a shaky first half as he struggled with the partnership of James McAtee and Oscar Bobb.

He got better in the second 45 minutes but ended his performance with the poorest penalty kick during the shootout.

Facundo Pellestri

The Uruguayan forward might have an excuse for being played out of position by Ten Hag, but that doesn’t negate the fact that he got caught sleeping for Manchester City’s equaliser.
