Katie Ledecky has won her fourth gold medal in the 800m freestyle which makes it nine Olympics gold medals in total.

The victory sees her match Russian gymnast, Larisa Latynina for the most Olympic gold medals won by a woman.

Ledecky edged past Ariarne Titmus in a tightly contested race touching the wall in 8:11.04, 1.24 seconds ahead of Australia’s Titmus.

“I knew it was going to be a tough race, all the way down to the finish. I felt confident coming into it,” Ledecky said after her win.

She added, “I just had to stick in the race and trust myself, trust my training, trust that I know how to race that event. I was just relieved that I got my hand on the wall.”

Also, Ledecky moves into fifth in the all time most decorated Olympians, only behind Michael Phelps (23 Olympic golds, 28 in total), Latynina with 18 medals, Soviet Union gymnast, Nikolai Andrianov (15) and Norwegian cross country skier, Marit Bjørgen who also has 15 medals.
