Super Eagles: Herve Renard Reveals How Close He Came to Taking the Nigeria Job

Seasoned coach, Herve Renard, has revealed he was close to becoming Head Coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles but eventually turned down the offer from the Nigeria Football Federation for the job.

Renard, a three-time CAF Coach of the Year and two-time AFCON winner with Zambia and Ivory Coast, told L’Equipe he considered taking the offer for the Nigeria national team job for weeks before ultimately walking away.

“I almost went to Nigeria. I weighed up the pros and cons for a few days, even a few weeks before refusing. It is the best offer I’ve had so far, the rest didn’t suit me,” Renard told the French publication.

Renard has made it clear that his goal remains to manage a national team rather than a club, although he may revise his plans if he does not find a position by January. Renard explained: “A national team is my priority, and I hope they can qualify for the World Cup.”

The Frenchman, whose last role was Head Coach of the France Women’s national team, is linked to Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria and Senegal – the latter having just parted ways with Alou Cisse.
