Sunderland Snatch EPL Spot from Sheffield United with Dramatic Comeback in Championship Playoff Final

A goal by Tommy Watson in the fifth minute of stoppage time has seen Sunderland come from a goal down to claim a dramatic 2-1 win over Sheffield United and seal promotion to the Premier League through the Championship Playoff Final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

United dominated the early exchanges and duly went in front midway through the first half when Tyrese Campbell ran on to Gustavo Hamer’s through ball before dinking over Sunderland keeper Anthony Patterson.

The Black Cats started to get a foot in the game after falling behind, but found themselves 2-0 down 10 minutes after conceding the first, but Burrows effort from the edge of the area was ruled out after VAR review for offside, much to Sunderland’s relief.

Brooks should have put the game to bed 20 minutes from time after going one-on-one with Sunderland’s Patterson, only for the Blades forward to be denied by good goalkeeping.

United would rue that missed chance as Eliezer Mayenda ran towards goal and held off a United defender before smashing a shot into the roof of the net for the equaliser after 76 minutes.

Watson, playing his final match for Sunderland before completing a move to Brighton, left the Black Cats with a memorable parting gift by sending a low shot into the bottom corner and sparking wild celebrations.
