Primeira Liga leaders, Sporting Lisbon, have announced that reserve team coach, Joao Pereira, will take over from Manchester United-bound Ruben Amorim as head coach of the club.

The 40-year-old has signed a contract until 2027 following Amorim’s departure to Old Trafford, according to club president Frederico Varandas during a press conference.

“It’s a source of pride, a privilege and an honour to be presented at Sporting,” said Pereira after being unveiled as the new head coach.

The former Portugal international has big and fond shoes to fill, as Amorim watched the club fight back from two goals down to claim a dramatic 4-2 win over SC Braga to maintain a winning start to the league season.

Apart from the 11 games won in the league, Amorim leaves Sporting in second place on the new-format UEFA Champions League table with 10 points after four matches – the last of which was a 4-1 demolition of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
