Italy are in search of a new national team head coach after parting ways with Luciano Spalletti at the end of Azzurri’s 2-0 win over Moldova in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match on Monday night.
Spalletti became coach in 2023 but endured a torrid spell with the national team, including a poor campaign at the 2024 European Championship which saw Spain edge England to win the title.
The former Napoli coach revealed before the match that he would be leaving the national team. Italy after a less-than-ideal start to the qualifying campaign, getting outplayed in a 3-0 loss at Norway in their opening Group I match on Friday.
Italy followed that up with a 2-0 win over Moldova, with Giancomo Raspadori putting the home side in front just before half-time while Andrea Cambiaso doubled the advantage soon after the restart.
“I’m disappointed with the result,” Spalletti said. “I don’t give back to those who come after me a great national team, because we didn’t play a great match tonight either. I was given the opportunity to work, I tried, I made mistakes and I even tried some experiments.“
Meanwhile, Erling Haaland scored his second in as many games for Norway to send the Scandinavians top of the group with two wins from two matches thanks to a 1-0 victory at Estonia on Tuesday night.
