Spain has continued dominating the football scene after defeating Olympic Games host nation France 5-3 to claim gold in the men’s football final at the Parc des Princes in Paris.
La Roja are now the reigning European and Olympic champions for the first time in their history.
Second-half substitute Sergio Camello scored a brace in the extra time to seal a deserved 5-3 win for the Spanish Olympic team at the end of a pulsating clash.
Thierry Henry’s team took the lead through Enzo Millot, only for a quick brace from Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez and a superb free-kick from Villarreal’s Alex Baena to give Spain a 3-1 lead by half-time.
France U23 turned the game around in the second 45 minutes with Maghnes Akliouche pulling a goal back after a beautiful cross from Bayern Munich’s new signing Michael Olise.
The comeback was complete when Crystal Palace star Jean-Philippe Mateta converted a penalty deep in stoppage time to get the stadium buzzing and send the game to extra time.
That was when Rayo Vallecano star Camello proved to be the match-winner, scoring a goal in each half of extra time to seal the gold medal for Spain.
Spain had won the silver medal in Tokyo and has now gone one better by winning gold this time – their second gold medal in the men’s football event following the one from the 1992 Games in Barcelona.
