Spain claimed the 2024 European Championship title following a hard-fought 2-1 win over England in the final played at Berlin’s Olympiastadion on Sunday night.
The win made the Spanish national team the record title winners of the continental competition, having now won it four times to surpass Germany, with whom they previously held the record and beat at the quarter-final stage of this year’s edition.
Spain’s first win came in the 1964 edition they hosted, beating the Soviet Union 2-1 in the final played in Madrid. This was followed by a drought that ended with successive titles won in 2008 and 2012.
This record is in addition to them being the only nation still to retain the title. The Spaniards can extend that record by defending the 2024 title in the next edition co-hosted by the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland) in 2028.
Will Spain be able to defend the title in 2028 or will England finally win one title?
