Australian Open defending champion, Jannik Sinner, came through a tough battle against Holger Rune to reach the quarter-final with a 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-2 win and set up a clash with home favourite, Alex de Minaur.
Minaur saw off Alex Michelsen of the United States 6-0 7-6 6-3 to reach the last eight for the first time and will fancy his chances of making the semis going by Sinner’s struggles in the heat.
The world number one had a medical timeout and needed ice towels during the second and third sets of his win over Rune, who also received treatment on court during the encounter.
Elsewhere, Lorenzo Sonego ended American qualifier, Learner Tien’s fairytale run in Melbourne with a 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-1 win to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final.
Sonego will play 21st seed Ben Shelton next after the American’s fourth-round opponent, Gael Monfils, retired early in the fourth set with a back issue while trailing 7-6 6-7 7-6 1-0.
