Inter Milan and Simone Inzaghi have part ways on Tuesday, just days after the historic loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final; which left the Italian club without a trophy for the 2024-25 season having been on the brink of winning a treble.
49-year-old Inzaghi saw his Inter side concede a 98th minute penalty in the penultimate Serie A match to draw 2-2 at home to Lazio and miss the chance of going a point clear of Napoli, who went on to finish a point ahead of the Nerazzurri to win the Scudetto.
That missed chance came after Inter fell to city rivals, AC Milan, in the Coppa Italia semi-final. But the hardest pill to swallow came in Munich on Saturday when Inter suffered a 5-0 humiliation at the hands of PSG in the Champions League final.
“The time has come for me to say goodbye to this club after a four-year journey, during which I gave everything,” Inzaghi said after news of his exit was confirmed by the club. “I want to dedicate one last word to the millions of fans who cheered me on, cried and suffered in difficult moments and laughed and celebrated in the six triumphs we experienced together. I will never forget you.”
Club President, Giuseppe Marotta, had stated after the UCL final that the club would be open to having Inzaghi stay on, but the Italian tactician has chosen to leave.
“I would like to thank Simone Inzaghi for the work done, for the passion shown and also for the sincerity in today’s discussion, which led to the common decision to separate our paths,” Marotta said.
Inzaghi leaves Inter with a Serie A title, two Coppa Italia crowns, three Supercoppa Italiana wins, and two runs to the Champions League final during his stint at the club. The former Lazio striker is now expected to take over Saudi Pro League giants, Al Hilal.
