Nigerian football legend John Mikel Obi advocates African players’ loyalty to the African continent in a recent episode of his podcast, “The Obi One Podcast.”
The former Super Eagles football captain passionately addressed the issue of African players’ allegiance to their home continent, stressing that African footballers should prioritise representing their own countries rather than opting to play for foreign nations.
“If you think Africa is second best… think again!” Mikel said in what is a passionate statement from the Nigerian star in defence of African football.
The former Chelsea midfielder highlighted the importance of national pride and the impact players can have in playing for their home countries especially in their prime years and not waiting until its to late or after not being called up by foreign teams.
While acknowledging the privileges of playing in top European leagues, Mikel emphasised that wearing the national team colours should be a source of immense pride and responsibility.
