Arsenal have inflicted a first defeat on Ruben Amorim since becoming Manchester United head coach in a 2-0 win over the Red Devils in a Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium, thanks to goals made from set-pieces.

The Gunners lead the league in goals from set-pieces since the start of last season, and earned a crucial win via that route again following a goalless first half in London.

Gabriel Martinelli had seen a goal struck off for offside in the first half, before Jurrien Timber put Mikel Arteta’s side ahead within 10 minutes of the second half, heading in a corner kick from Declan Rice.

David Raya kept Arsenal ahead with a spectacular save to deny Matthijs De Ligt with 20 minutes to go, and the goalkeeper’s save proved crucial as the Gunners doubled their lead minutes later thanks to William Saliba guiding the ball into the net off Thomas Partey’s header from Saka’s corner-kick.

The win makes it the first time ever that Arsenal have won four straight matches against Manchester United in the Premier League, just as the Gunners are now seven points behind league leaders, Liverpool, who dropped points following a 3-3 draw at Newcastle United.
