World number one Aryna Sabalenka is through to the Miami Open quarter-final stage after a smooth 6-4, 6-4 victory over defending champion Danielle Collins of the USA in one hour and 19 minutes.
Sabalenka is joined in the last eight by world number two Iga Swiatek, after she powered past Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina 7-6, 6-3 to set up a meeting with 19-year-old Filipino wildcard Alexandra Eala.
Eala will be playing in her first WTA quarter-final after Spanish 10th seed Paula Badosa withdrew due to a lower back injury, having upset Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the previous round.
Meanwhile, world number three Coco Gauff will not be joining the women’s top two in the last eight after she fell in straight sets to Magda Linette, who will face sixth seed, Jasmine Paolini, for a spot in the semis.
Elsewhere, Emma Raducanu defeated 17th seed Amanda Anismova 6-1, 6-3 to reach her first WTA 1,000 quarter-final where she will take on world number four Jessica Pegula after the American got a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk.
