Women’s world number one, Aryna Sabalenka, was made to work by Denmark’s Clara Tauson before sealing a straight-set win and advancing to the Australian Open fourth round.

Gunning for a third successive title in Melbourne, the Belarusian top seed needed two hours and six minutes before finally sealing a 7-6 6-4 win over her opponent at the Rod Laver Arena.

There were 11 breaks of serve in the enthralling encounter, with eight of them coming in a keenly contested first set which was decided via tie-breakers.

It took until the ninth game for Sabalenka to break serve in the second set before seeing out the win to extend her winning streak at the Grand Slam to 17 straight matches.

Sabalenka is also on a run of 30 wins in her last 31 matches and will next face the winner of the match between Mirra Andreeva or Magdalena Frech in the fourth round.

Elsewhere on Friday morning, Laura Siegemund’s fairytale run at the Slam came to a crushing end with a 6-1 6-2 loss at the hands of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, while Donna Vekic came through a tough battle to win 7-6 6-7 7-5 over Diana Shnaider.
