Two goals in three minutes have seen the Amavubi of Rwanda record a surprise win over the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a qualifying match for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Nigeria went into the match with qualification to AFCON 2025 already sealed and only looking to end the qualifying group campaign on an unbeaten note. Rwanda, on their part, needed a win coupled with a win for Libya over Benin to join the Super Eagles in Morocco.
Following a goalless first half, Samuel Chukwueze broke the deadlock for Nigeria on the hour mark with a brilliant solo effort that saw him go past the challenge of three Rwanda players before firing a shot into the bottom corner.
But the joy of home fans in Uyo was cut short as goals by Ange Mutsinzi and Innocent Nshuti turned the game in Rwanda’s favour. The Amavubi held on for a first-ever win over Nigeria, yet it proved futile as Benin played out a goalless draw with Libya to qualify for AFCON 2025.
