Ruano broke an the Olympics record in the Women’s Shooting event after scoring 45 points in the finale, breaking the 43-point record set by Rehak Stefecekova Zuzana from Slovakia in the 2020 Olympics held in Tokyo.

“I can’t believe it’s for real. I’m so happy, I’m honoured to be here, it wasn’t easy to get here again. I want to thank Guatemala and also my father,” Adriana said after her impressive showing.

Ruano previously competed as a gymnast until a spinal injury in 2011 forced her to switch. An MRI showed the then-16-year-old had six damaged vertebrae.

13 years later, Ruano’s gold medal has put Guatemala in the history books, being just the third medal ever received by the Central American nation at the Olympic Games.
