Remo Stars have extended their lead atop the Nigeria Premier Football League after playing out a goalless draw with Katsina United on Sunday, while Rivers United came away from Abia State empty-handed.

Goals from Emmanuel Ogbuagu and Anthony Ijoma condemned Finidi George’s Rivers United to a 2-0 loss at the hands of Abia Warriors in Umuahia and leave Rivers United seven points adrift of Remo Stars with five games left this season.

Elsewhere in the NPFL, Sunshine Stars boosted their chances of escaping relegation with a 2-1 win over Enyimba thanks to goals by Elmer Arunta and Waheed Adebayo which came either side of Christian Nnaji’s equaliser for Enyimba in Akure.

The result puts the Akure Gunners on 38 points from 33 matches to go level on points with Akwa United in 18th after the Uyo-based team played out a 1-1 draw with El-Kanemi Warriors.

Both Akwa United and Sunshine Stars are now three points away from safety as Katsina United, in 17th place, came away from Ikenne with a valuable point in the goalless draw with league leaders, Remo Stars, just days after falling 6-0 to Ikorodu City in Lagos.
