Real Madrid Suffer Blow in La Liga Title Race as Isco Torments Former Club

Isco scored the winner for Real Betis as the Spanish midfielder dealt a big blow to his former club, Real Madrid, in the La Liga title race on Saturday night.

Real Madrid missed the chance to go top of La Liga provisionally after slumping to a 2-1 defeat away to Real Betis; not the ideal preparation for the set of games coming up for them.

Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti fielded a strong line-up, despite their upcoming UEFA Champions League clash against city rivals Atletico Madrid next week.

But it was former player Isco who struck against his old club to put a dent on the reigning holders’ hopes of defending their La Liga crown.

The visitors dominated the early proceedings and took the lead after just 10 minutes when Brahim Diaz tapped in Ferland Mendy’s pass from the left after a great through ball from Kylian Mbappe.

Real Betis responded brilliantly and got the equaliser just after the half-hour mark through Johnny Cardoso’s close-range header, off a corner kick from midfielder Isco.

Cardoso nearly made it two for Betis moments later but Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois pulled off a crucial save shortly before half-time.

Madrid felt they should have gotten a penalty early in the second half after Brazilian attacker Rodrygo was fouled in the area, but the referee waved play on.

The home side were soon awarded a spot kick soon after, when Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger was adjudged to have fouled Jesus Rodriguez in the box. Isco stepped up and converted from 12 yards to put Betis ahead on the night.

Ancelotti sought to spark some life into his attack with the introduction of Arda Guler and Endrick late on, but Betis’ backline held firm while goalkeeper Adrian blocked a late attempt from Vinicius Jr.

The defeat leaves Real Madrid second in La Liga with 54 points, level with leaders Barcelona, who play Real Sociedad on Sunday.

As for Real Betis, the win sees them occupy sixth position with 38 points as they continue their hunt for a European qualifying berth next season.
