UEFA Champions League title holders, Real Madrid, achieved a major milestone in the competition’s history after claiming a hard-fought 2-1 win over city rivals, Atletico Madrid, in the first leg round of 16 match on Tuesday night.

Playing in their 500th Champions League match, goals by Rodrygo Goes and Brahim Diaz in the early minutes of each half, sandwiched by Julian Alvarez’s strike for Atletico, gave Carlo Ancelotti’s team a slight advantage heading into next week’s second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The result makes Real Madrid the first team to reach 300 match wins in Champions League and European Cup history.

Los Blancos will aim to advance in the competition next week in the second leg as they bid for a record-extending 16th title in the competition.
