Former Brazil international and Real Madrid legend, Marcelo, has left Brazilian Serie A side, Fluminense by mutual consent although on a sour note following an altercation with the head coach leading to the contract termination.
The contract termination was reached mutually between the club and player, who was set to be brought on against Gremio on Friday night, before coach Mano Menezes changed his mind after Marcelo appeared to shove Menezes’ hand off him.
Menezes appeared to take offence at the gesture and pushed Marcelo back to the bench. “I was going to put Marcelo in at that moment, but I heard something I didn’t like, so I changed my mind,” Menezes said in a post-match press conference.
“The institutional and emotional ties between Fluminense and Marcelo continue to be maintained,” read a club statement. “Fluminense thanks Marcelo and will continue, as always, to support his success in all his challenges.”
Marcelo came through the ranks at Fluminense before going on to win 25 trophies over a 15-year spell at Real Madrid. The 36-year-old then returned to Fluminense following brief spell at Greek side, Olimpiacos.
