Reigning champions Real Madrid boosted their chances of reaching the UEFA Champions League Round-of-16 after thrashing RB Salzburg 5-1 in the Spanish capital on Wednesday night.

The visitors dominated the early proceedings and created some opportunities with their high press, before Carlo Ancelotti’s men gradually regained control and soon opened the scoring with a quick counter attack.

Vinicius Jr. delivered a long pass through the box for Jude Bellingham but after failing to control the ball in his stride, Rodrygo reacted quickly to slot a first-touch effort just inside the right post in the 23rd minute.

The enterprising Rodrygo then extended the home side’s lead in the 34th minute, curling home a shot from inside the box after a brilliant backheel flick from Bellingham in a fine one-two combination between them.

Kylian Mbappé took advantage of a massive blunder by Salzburg goalkeeper, Janis Blaswich, to score the third goal in the 48th minute.

Vinicius then got his name on the scoresheet in the 55th and 77th minutes to extend Madrid’s lead, while Mads Bidstrup scored the visitors’ consolation goal in the 85th minute.

Real Madrid are currently 16th on the standings with 12 points and have secured a playoff spot, but would need to win their last game at Brest and rely on other results to earn a top-eight finish and avoid a two-legged playoff.

However, Salzburg, occupying the 34th position, are now eliminated from the competition with only three points from seven games.

Elsewhere on Wednesday night, Rafael Leao’s goal was enough to give Milan a 1-0 win at home to Girona for a fifth straight win in the Champions League. Sergio Conceicao’s men are now sixth with 15 points.

Inter Milan moved up to fourth with 16 points after a 1-0 win at Sparta Prague, while Sporting CP dropped to 23rd with 10 points after losing 2-1 at already eliminated RB Leipzig – the Bundesliga club’s first win in the competition this season.
