Rangers Name Interim Manager as Financial Issues Delay Potential Steven Gerrard Return

Scottish Premiership outfit Rangers have appointed former player and captain Barry Ferguson in charge of the Ibrox side, following the departure of Philippe Clement.

The 47-year-old, who won five league titles, five Scottish Cups and five League Cups across two spells at Ibrox and who has previously managed at Clyde, Kelty Hearts and Alloa, will be joined by coaches Issame Charai, Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor until the end of the season.

Rangers parted ways with Clement following last weekend’s 2-0 home defeat to St Mirren, which proved to be the final straw in an underwhelming campaign.

Meanwhile, former Liverpool midfielder and England international Steven Gerrard who is being tipped to return to Ibrox as Rangers’ next permanent boss, would have to wait until the summer to assume the role (if successful), due to financial implications to consider over the next couple of months.

Gerrard, who previously managed at Ibrox and at Aston Villa, recently coached Al Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League but would need to wait because UK tax rules require those working abroad to remain out of the country for a full tax year in order to avoid a bill on their their earnings once they return.

According to Talksport, Gerrard isn’t able to take the Rangers job until April at the earliest due to potential tax issues in Saudi Arabia. If he did return to the UK before then, he could be forced into paying tax on everything he earned while in Saudi Arabia for the period between April 2024 and January 2025.

With tax years running from April to April, Gerrard has to remain a non-UK resident for the next couple of months to avoid paying a multi-million-pound tax bill – the Liverpool legend earned a reported £15m-per-year while managing at Al-Ettifaq, which would become liable for tax.
