French champions Paris Saint-Germain have celebrated the anniversary of signing Nigerian football legend Austin Jay Jay Okocha on this day 26 years ago.
The former Super Eagles captain joined the French Ligue 1 giants from Turkish side Fenerbahce in 1998. Okocha signed for the Parisiens for a reported fee in the range of £14 million, making him the most expensive African player at the time.
Known for his dribbling skills and passing range, Okocha went on to spend four seasons with the French side, playing over 80 games and scoring 12 goals along the way.
PSG fans will fondly remember the former Nigeria international midfielder for scoring five goals in the 2001 UEFA Intertoto Cup, which helped PSG become joint champions alongside Aston Villa and ES Troyes AC.
Okocha, who is a former BBC African Footballer of the Year, also mentored two-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldinho – also known for his dribbling skills, during their time at the Parc des Princes.
The Paris-based club took to their official Instagram page to celebrate Okocha to mark the 26th anniversary since they signed him. The Ligue 1 giants also shared a couple of old videos of the Nigerian legendary midfielder dazzling and scoring spectacular goals during his time at the club.
Okocha is still regarded as a PSG legend despite not winning a league title or any other major trophy before leaving the club in 2002 to join English Premier League side Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer.
