French champions Paris Saint-Germain are headed to Munich for a Champions League final showdown against Inter Milan following a 2-1 win over Arsenal on the night and 3-1 on aggregate.
Arsenal started the game with great intent and went close to scoring after only two minutes when Declan Rice sent a strong header just wide of the PSG goal.
Then PSG goalkeeper Gigi Donnarumma had to be alert to make two stunning saves to deny Gabriel Martinelli from close range and Martin Odegaard from long range before the 10th minute as Arsenal went in search of a way back in the tie, having lost the first leg 1-0 a week ago.
But PSG slowly started to get a footing in the contest and went close to scoring next through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, whose curling shot evaded David Raya’s reach but crashed off the woodwork after 17 minutes.
Luis Enrique’s side would be rewarded with a goal 10 minutes later, as Arsenal failed to deal with a free-kick, leading to the ball falling for Fabian Ruiz, who did well to lose his marker before smashing a volley into the net with help of a slight William Saliba deflection.
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal started the second half almost as they did the first, with Bukayo Saka forcing Donnarumma to make a finger-tip save off a curling shot headed for the top corner as PSG continued to hold off the Premier League side’s attacking onslaught.
Despite Arsenal’s efforts, it was PSG that got the next chance to score in the 68th minute after Myles Lewis-Skelly was adjudged by VAR to have handled the ball in the area. However, Raya guessed right to keep out Vitinha’s penalty – the first to be missed by the PSG midfielder this season.
It was supposed to serve as boost for Arsenal, but PSG quickly made sure to squash any hopes of a comeback by the Gunners four minutes later through Achraf Hakimi’s goal.
Bukayo Saka finally got the breakthrough three minutes after Hakimi’s goal, as a defensive slip set the ball loose onto the Arsenal star’s path in the box. Saka then went round Donnarumma to tap in. Saka would be left frustrated two minutes later when he blasted a ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy.
PSG would see off the rest of the contest to seal a 3-1 aggregate win and reach a second-ever Champions League final.
