Michal Probierz has resigned as Poland’s manager just days after the country’s record goalscorer and Barcelona striker, Robert Lewandowski, declared that he would no longer play for the national team under him.

Probierz took the Poland job in September 2023 and coached the team to the 2024 European Championship. The Polish FA’s president, Cezary Kulesza, had summoned Probierz on Wednesday for a discussion.

Lewandowski had slammed Probierz over the handling of the team captaincy, with the 36-year-old striker getting replaced by midfielder, Piotr Zielinkski, ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Finland, which Poland lost 2-1 in Helsinki.

“I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of coach,” Probierz said. “Performing this function was the fulfilment of my professional dreams and the greatest honour in my life.”
