Nigeria’s Ese Brume has secured her place in the women’s long jump final at the Olympic Games with a stunning final jump of 6.76m, just clearing the automatic qualifying mark.
Brume, who had been struggling earlier in the competition, found herself on the brink of elimination, sitting in 9th place after her first two attempts.
Her initial best jump of 6.44m had left her in 7th place in her group, far from the safety of qualification. In a dramatic turn of events and everything riding on her last attempt, Brume delivered under pressure, launching herself to 6.76m and securing her spot among the finalists.
In the same group, Ruth Usoro was impressive throughout, comfortably positioning herself for the final with a best jump of 6.68m on her second attempt to finish in second place.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s third representative, Prestina Ochonogor, also put on a strong showing, climbing to 2nd place in her group after registering a mark of 6.65m on her second attempt, just shy of the automatic qualifying mark of 6.75m but enough to keep her in contention.
As the dust settled, Brume’s final jump was the standout moment, ensuring Nigeria’s presence in the final of the Women’s Long Jump event. All eyes will now be on Brume and her compatriots as they look to win gold for Nigeria.
