Rivers United and Remo Stars endured a winless weekend in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) as the early pace-setters saw Enyimba close the gap on them at the end of match-day nine.
Enyimba were seconds away from also ending the match-day winless after Toyeeb Ajeyigbe scored in the 89th minute for Ikorodu City to cancel out Ifeanyi Ihemekwele’s sixth-minute opener for the Aba Elephants.
But Ikorodu City’s joy was short-lived as Moses Adikwu secured all three points for the former champions in the 92nd minute, ending a run of three matches without a win for Yemi Olarenwaju’s men.
The result puts Enyimba in third place with 17 points, a point behind Remo Stars that lost 1-0 at Heartland in Owerri, and four points behind league leaders, Rivers United, that only managed a 1-1 draw at home to Niger Tornadoes.
Meanwhile, Daniel Amokachi’s Lobi Stars got a 2-1 win at home to Bayelsa United, Enugu Rangers picked up a point from Ilorin in a 1-1 draw with Kwara United, while Ahmed Musa was nullified in Lafia as Kano Pillars fell 1-0 to Nasarawa United.
Elsewhere in the NPFL, Abia Warriors came away from Edo State with a 1-0 win over Bendel Insurance, Shooting Stars pipped Akwa United 2-1 in Ibadan, and Plateau United moved up to fourth place with a 3-0 win over Sunshine Stars in Jos.
