24-time grand slam winner, Novak Djokovic, has powered into a record 19th French Open quarter-final and notched a 100th win on the clay court tournament thanks to a straight sets victory over Britain’s Cameron Norrie on Monday.
The three-time champion at Roland Garros made light work of Norrie, beating him 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 on Court Philippe Chatrier to register his 100th match-win at the tournament and set up a record for most quarter-final appearances in a single grand slam event.
Norrie started his Roland Garros campaign with a shock win over 11th seed Daniil Medvedev in the first round, but there would be no repeat against Djokovic, who is in the hunt for a record 25th grand slam title.
Making his first round of 16 appearance in Paris, Norrie was not going to get a first win over Djokovic in their sixth all-time meeting, quickly losing the first set against the Serb, who needed treatment on his foot for blisters during the match.
The former world number one then pulled clear of the Scotsman in the final set, breaking early and reeling off five games in a row before serving out victory to reach the last eight where a clash against Zverev awaits.
38-year-old Djokovic holds an 8-5 winning record in his head-to-head with the highly rated German, but retired injured from his last meeting against Zverev at the Australian Open semi-finals in January.
Zverev is in the French Open last eight thanks to another retirement due to injury, as his Dutch opponent, Tallon Griekspoor, was unable to finish the match while trailing Zverev 4-6, 0-3 at the Court Suzanne Lenglen.
Elsewhere, world number five, Jack Draper, is out of the grand slam following a surprise 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 defeat at the hands of world number 62, Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan.
Bublik’s reward for the stunning last 16 win is a clash with world number one, Jannik Sinner, who came through his last 16 match against Andrey Rublev of Russia with relative ease, claiming a 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 win on Monday.
