The Super Falcons will take on the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in a one-off international friendly on Tuesday at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, following the cancellation of the initial leg originally billed for Saturday at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.
Logistical issues on the part of the Cameroonian team, who arrived in Ikenne late on Friday, forced the cancellation of the first leg due to disrupted matchday protocols and recovery schedules.
The second leg had initially been moved forward to Monday, June 2, following the cancellation of the first leg, but African football governing body, CAF, declined to approve the new date, prompting a return to the original schedule of Tuesday, June 3.
Nigeria’s friendly with Cameroon will serve as a single high-stakes encounter, with both sides aiming to fine-tune preparations ahead of major international engagements.
For the Super Falcons, it will be their first outing since a narrow 1–0 defeat to France in November and forms a key part of their build-up to the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Cameroon, though absent from this year’s WAFCON after failing to qualify, arrive with recent match sharpness, having beaten Morocco in a friendly in April.
The Lionesses have not beaten the Falcons since 2012 and have failed to score in any of their last six meetings. Nigeria have won four of those matches and advanced on penalties in another after a goalless draw in the 2018 WAFCON semi-final.
Coach Jean-Baptiste Bisseck’s side will be eager to reverse that trend, but history and recent statistics offer little encouragement. Nigeria are unbeaten in their last six encounters against Cameroon and have won their last four home matches against African opposition.
While the Falcons have shown defensive frailties against European and South American oppositions, conceding eight in their last five, they have kept four clean sheets in their previous five games against African teams.
