The Flamingoes of Nigeria kicked off their FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in grand style thanks to a 4-1 demolition of New Zealand in a Group A match in the Dominican Republic.

It took just two minutes for the African giants coached by Bankole Olowookere to break the deadlock through Shakirat Moshood’s close range effort into the bottom corner.

Nigeria almost made it 2-0 after eight minutes but a long range effort came off the crossbar. Kahdijat Adegoke got Nigeria’s second only five minutes later when another long ranger slipped through the keeper’s gloves.

It became 3-0 after 28 minutes as Farihat Abulwahab extended Nigeria’s advantage before Taiwo Afolabi, who was eventually named Player of the Match, made it 4-0 for Nigeria 10 minutes into the second half.

Hannah Saxon got a consolation goal for New Zealand as Nigeria saw off a comfortable win. Next up for the Flamingoes is a top-of-the-table clash against Ecuador on Saturday night.

Ecuador got their campaign off to a winning start thanks to a 2-0 victory over host nation, Dominican Republic. Elsewhere, Spain beat USA 3-1 while Colombia and South Korea played out a 1-1 draw.
