President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has downplayed concerns over potential sanctions or diplomatic fallout ahead of the Super Eagles’ international friendly against Russia on June 6.

Gusau insisted that the fixture has received full approval from world governing body FIFA and all necessary travel arrangements, including visa issuances for players and officials, were processed through the Russian embassy in Abuja.

“This match is FIFA-approved. Every process, including visa issuance and formal clearances, has followed global football protocols. There are no fears on that front,” Gusau said in an interview with Patrick Ngwaogu, firmly addressing speculation about possible political consequences due to Russia’s current geopolitical situation.

In response to the invasion of Ukraine, FIFA and UEFA suspended Russia from all international competitions in 2022, banning its national teams and clubs from participating in events such as the World Cup and European Championships till date.

The NFF boss also highlighted the benefits of the high-profile friendly, describing it as an essential part of the Super Eagles’ rebuilding process under newly appointed head coach, Eric Chelle.

“This match is a crucial step in the team’s evolution under our new head coach. It’s not just about the result. It’s about learning, development, and team cohesion. These are the kinds of games we need to grow,” he added.
