The Nigeria Football Federation have announced the appointment of Eric Sekou Chelle as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles more than six months after parting ways with Finidi George.
Chelle’s appointment for the Nigeria national team job comes after his recommendation for the position by the Technical and Development sub-committee was endorsed on Tuesday by the NFF Executive Committee.
The former Mali international’s first task will be overseeing Nigeria’s qualifying matches in March with the aim of booking a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup taking place in North America.
Before now, Chelle was the Mali national team head coach, and led the Eagles to the brink of AFCON 2023 semi-final, only to lose after extra-time to the hosts and eventual winners, Cote D’Ivoire.
He replaces Finidi George, who was fired in June 2024 following a poor start to the World Cup qualifying campaign. In the interim, Austin Eguavoen guided the Super Eagles to qualify for AFCON 2025.
