Carabao Cup holders, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has released a statement after the club announced he was recovering from pneumonia.

47-year-old Howe fell ill last week and was admitted to hospital on Friday, where he spent the weekend and subsequently missed the Magpies’ 4-1 victory over Manchester United last Sunday.

However, it has now been confirmed he is recovering from pneumonia. “Newcastle United can announce that Eddie Howe is recovering in hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia,” the club stated on Monday.

The statement added, “The club continues to extend its best wishes and support to Eddie and his family as he continues his recovery. Get well soon, gaffer.”

On his part, Howe said in a statement: “A huge thank you to everyone connected with Newcastle United and the wider football community for your messages and warm wishes. They have meant a lot to me and my family.”

He added, “I also want to pay tribute to our incredible NHS and the hospital staff who have treated me. I’m immensely grateful for the specialist care I’m receiving and, after a period of recovery, I look forward to being back as soon as possible.”

As Howe continues his recovery, assistant manager Jason Tindall will be in the dugout for Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace and against Aston Villa this weekend.
