Newcastle United Confirm Anthony Gordon Red Card Appeal Ahead League Cup Final

Premier League side, Newcastle United, have revealed they will launch an appeal to have Anthony Gordon’s red card rescinded in time for the Carabao Cup Final against Liverpool, following the winger’s dismissal in their FA Cup tie last weekend.

The English attacking midfielder was sent off for shoving Jean Paul van Hecke, as the Magpies lost 2-1 to Brighton in the FA Cup fifth-round at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Gordon’s red card means he will be suspended for the next three matches, including the Cup Final at Wembley against Liverpool on March 16th – a blow for the Magpies as they look to end a 70-year title drought.

Newcastle United boss, Eddie Howe, claims the 24 year-old had no malicious intent in his actions and says the Magpies will look to have the card overturned if they believe there are grounds to do so.

“Of course. If we analyse the incident and feel there’s grounds for that [an appeal], we will do without hesitation,” Howe said. “I’d need to see it, I can’t sit here and give an honest opinion to that until I’ve done the work that you’ve done and looked at it. But knowing the player, I know there’s no malice intended there.”

Losing Gordon would be a huge blow for Newcastle as they look to end a trophy drought that dates back more than half a century. They were in the Carabao Cup Final two years ago, losing 2-0 to Manchester United but will be hoping to go one better this time around against favourites Liverpool.
