A number of Nigerian stars were involved in Matchday 8 as the league phase of the UEFA Champions League and Europa League ended during the week, with these players making a mark in some of the matches while one was missed dearly.

Nathan Tella (Bayer Leverkusen)

The wing man was in action for Xabi Alonso’s side and was on target as Leverkusen saw off Czechia outfit Sparta Prague 2-0 to seal an automatic top-eight spot in the new-format league phase of the UEFA Champions League.

Raphael Onyedika (Club Brugge)

The 23-year-old midfielder started for the Belgian side against Premier League champions, Manchester City, in the UEFA Champions League, and he opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time.

However, his goal was not enough as Club Brugge eventually fell 3-1 to the 2023 UCL winners. Club Brugge still made it to the playoff round of the competition where they will face Italian Serie A side, Atalanta.

Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray)

The Super Eagles hitman featured for the Turkish Super Lig side and managed to score his team’s consolation goal in injury time of their 2-1 defeat at Dutch Eredivisie giants, Ajax, in the UEFA Europa League.

Defeat mattered little for Gala, though, as they still booked a ticket to the playoff round of the competition.

Cyriel Dessers (Rangers)

The Gers striker was in the starting line-up and he provided an assist in the 2-1 home win over Belgian side, Royal Union St Gilloise, and see that Rangers finish 8th to advance to the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League.

Samuel Chukwueze (AC Milan)

The winger was a second half substitute when he replaced Alvaro Morata but he could do little to prevent the Rossoneri’s 2-1 loss away to Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb. Despite the defeat, 10-man Milan managed to secure a spot in the playoff round of the UEFA Champions League.

Ademola Lookman (Atalanta)

The reigning CAF Men’s Player of the Year holder was unavailable for La Dea in the thrilling 2-2 draw at Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League due to injury. The result saw Atalanta narrowly miss out on a top-eight spot but still progress to the playoff round of the competition.
