Australia’s Mollie O’Callaghan set a new Olympic record in the Women’s 200m Swimming freestyle. The 20-year-old claimed gold with a time of 1:53.27 to secure her first ever gold medal at the Olympics Games.
O’Callaghan adds to her already impressive medal collection after winning three relay gold medals – two at the 2021 games in Tokyo, Japan and the 4x100m freestyle in Paris on Saturday.
“My expectations are very high. That was an amazing race,” O’Callaghan stated after her win. “I’m always wanting that little bit more. I just had to with coach Dean Boxall and trust him knowing what to do and what’s best.”
Meanwhile, Australia teammate Ariarne Titmus secured second place and a silver medal with a time of 1:53.81. Titmus also won the 400m freestyle gold medal in Paris.
O’Callaghan becomes the fourth Australian woman to win the event behind Titmus (2020), Sussie O’Neill (2000) and Shane Gould (1972).
