Mo Salah, Harvey Elliott Fire Liverpool to Champions League Knockout Phase

Liverpool secure an automatic spot in the UEFA Champions League Round-of-16 following a 2-1 victory over French Ligue 1 side, Lille, on Tuesday night at Anfield.

The Reds came into the encounter looking to consolidate on top spot, with a win guaranteed to see them through to the next round and a relatively even display in the first half ended with Liverpool holding the advantage. 

Egyptian forward, Mo Salah, opened the scoring in the 34th minute after he was released on the counter-attack by Curtis Jones to put the ball past Lille keeper Chevalier.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the second half when Mandi was shown a second yellow card in the 59th minute, but that mattered little as their Canadian striker, Jonathan David, restored parity three minutes later.

However, Reds midfielder Harvey Elliott, on as a substitute, sealed the win in the 67th minute to cement Liverpool’s place into the round of 16 and maintain their unbeaten run in the League Phase this campaign.

Elsewhere in the Champions League on Tuesday night, Juventus played out a goalless draw at Club Brugge, while Crvena Zvezda fell just short of completing a dramatic comeback from 3-0 down at home to PSV Eindhoven, losing 3-2 to the Eredivisie side in the end.
