Mikel Obi Reveals Two Positions Maresca Must Sign Players for Chelsea

Former Chelsea midfield star, John Mikel Obi, has come out once again to name two players the Blues need to sign badly in order to compete with the top teams.

Chelsea will be without Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu for some weeks, while Joao Felix has left the club on loan to AC Milan until the end of the season.

That, coupled with a need for Chelsea to score goals more consistently, has made Mikel Obi to bring up the matter of players Chelsea need to sign again. “You can talk about it, the recruitment process that I’ve been talking about the whole time – Paul Winstanley, I know the guy,” Mikel said on his podcast.

Paul Winstanley joined the Chelsea sporting department from Brighton in 2023, taking up the role of Sporting Director along with Laurence Stewart, who arrived Stamford Bridge from AS Monaco in February 2023.

And Mikel Obi had nothing but praise for him. “I’ve spoken to [Winstanley] a few times. Sounds bright, very, very bright guy. Knows his job. But I just think that the recruitment process at the summer, it wasn’t good enough, which I talked about,” he said.

The former Nigeria international added, “A lot of Chelsea fans said, no, no, you just want Victor Osimhen at the club because he’s your friend – no he’s not. We needed a striker. We needed another goalkeeper, another top goalkeeper.”

While Chelsea are light in attack for now, manager Enzo Maresca recently confirmed Robert Sanchez had lost his place as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, with Filip Jorgensen taking the spot. Jorgensen was in goal when the Blues fell 3-0 at Brighton in the Premier League on last Friday.
