Merino Double Gives Arsenal the Win as Gunners Close Gap on Liverpool

Mikel Merino scored twice in the closing stages to give Arsenal a 2-0 win at Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday and move the Gunners within four points of Liverpool at the top.

Arsenal are dealing with an injury crisis upfront after top scorer Kai Havertz was ruled out for the season with a hamstring injury, leaving Mikel Arteta without a recognised striker in the first team.

He started with Leandro Trossard upfront at the King Power Stadium with Ethan Nwaneri and Raheem Sterling flanking the Belgium international in attack.

Despite their best efforts, Arsenal failed to find the breakthrough in the first half and looked set to settle for a share of the spoils against the relegation threatened Foxes until the Spanish midfielder came through off the bench.

Nwaneri was denied twice by the Leicester woodwork before the teenage sensation set up Merino for the breakthrough with 10 minutes to go, with the Spaniard converting from a Leandro Trossard cross to seal all three points for Arsenal in the 90th minute.

The win puts Arsenal on 53 points in second place, four points behind Liverpool on the league table.
