Oscar Piastri will start the Spanish Grand Prix in pole position, beating his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris by 0.209 seconds in the final qualifying round on Saturday after a mistake in the final run saw the Brit lose pole.

The Australian has now claimed pole position for the fourth time this year, with the 0.209-second margin between him and Norris being the biggest one set for pole position so far this season, beating the time of 0.168 set in qualifying for the Bahrain GP.

Behind the papayas will be world champion, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing, who edged his Mercedes rival, George Russell, to start third on the grid after finishing 0.302 seconds slower than Piastri in qualifying.

Russell posted same qualifying time as his Red Bull Racing rival – 1m 11.848s – but will start in fourth place on the grid after posting the time some seconds after Verstappen set his time.

Elsewhere, Lewis Hamilton will start in fifth spot for Ferrari ahead of Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes. The top 10 is completed with Charles Leclerc, Pierre Gasly, Iscak Hadjar and Fernando Alonso in that order.

Piastri will be looking to stay ahead of Norris in the championship standings, with just three points separating the McLaren duo. Verstappen will hope to come from behind to close the 25-point gap between him and Piastri.
