Mbappe Grabs First Real Madrid Hat-trick as Atletico Fumble Again in La Liga

Kylian Mbappe has grabbed his first Real Madrid hat-trick to give the La Liga leaders a 3-0 win at Real Valladolid and open a four-point lead at the top as Atletico Madrid failed to keep up with their city rivals on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid followed up a surprise loss at Leganes last time out in the league with a frustrating 1-1 draw at home to Villarreal, with Samuel Lino’s second-half goal giving Diego Simeone’s side the equaliser after Gerard Moreno’s penalty gave the Yellow Submarines the lead.

That result was all the needed motivation for Real Madrid in their trip to Valladolid where the home side showed promise in the early exchanges before Mbappe combined with Jude Bellingham to find the breakthrough for Carlo Ancelotti’s side after 30 minutes.

The Frenchman got his brace just before the hour mark, scoring almost a copy of his first goal with the difference being it was with Rodrygo he combined with to create space for the goal.

Valladolid’s night went from bad to worse when Mario Martin was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in the 90th minute, with Mbappe sending the keeper the wrong way to score the resultant penalty and seal the hat-trick.

The result puts Real Madrid on 49 points, with Atletico in second on 45 points after 21 matches. Barcelona and Athletic Club, both with 39 points from 20 games, come up against Valencia and Leganes respectively on Sunday.
