Kylian Mbappe hit a hat-trick for Real Madrid in a 4-3 loss to Barcelona in El Clasico, a result that all-but-ends Madrid’s La Liga title quest, though there was consolation for the French striker as his goals saw him break a 32-year-old record.
Mbappe put Real Madrid 2-0 up within the opening 15 minutes of the El Clasico as Carlo Ancelotti’s men went about closing the gap on Barcelona to one-point, only for Hansi Flick’s side to rally and go 4-2 up by half-time before Mbappe completed his hat-trick to set up a dramatic finale.
The goals make Mbappe the first Real Madrid player to score a hat-trick in El Clasico since Ivan Zamorano achieved the feat 30 years ago in 1995, also going one better to have the highest scoring debut season for Los Blancos with 39 goals to surpass the 37 set by Zamorano in the 1992-93 season.
Mbappe had already gone past the likes of Ronaldo de Lima (30 goals), Ruud van Nistelrooy (33 goals) and Cristiano Ronaldo (33 goals) before passing Zamorano. He currently leads the La Liga golden boot race with 27 goals, adding seven goals in the Champions League.
