Brentford continued their push for European football next season with an exciting 4-3 victory over Manchester United at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday.
United took the lead in the 14th minute when Mason Mount finished off a fine cross from winger Alejandro Garnacho.The hosts levelled in the 27th minute when captain Mikkel Damsgaard saw his cross deflect in off defender Luke Shaw.
Thomas Frank’s men went in front six minutes later in controversial fashion, when Kevin Schade towered over United defender Tyler Fredricson to power home his 10th goal of the season with a strong header.
The Red Devils were livid when play continued after defender Matthijs de Ligt went down with an injury earlier in the move leading up to the goal.
Schade completed his brace after the restart in the 70th minute, after heading from close range off a cross by Bryan Mbeumo. The hosts added a fourth after Michael Kayode slipped in Yoane Wissa who turned his effort home.
Manchester United soon launched a mini comeback of some sorts eight minutes from time after Alejandro Garnacho’s stunning long-range effort beat Brentford keeper Mark Flekken.
The Red Devils then ensured it was a nervy finish when second half substitute Amad Diallo struck deep into injury time.Brentford held on for the win which pushed them into ninth, one point behind eighth-placed Bournemouth.
As for United, they remain 15th on the log and they turn their attention to Thursday’s UEFA Europa Conference League reverse fixture against Athletic Bilbao.
