Brentford came from two goals down to earn a pulsating 2-2 draw with defending Premier League champions Manchester City at the Gtech Community Stadium on Tuesday night.
The home side started brightly, not giving City time to settle in any area of the pitch while locating pockets of space in attack. In the opening 15 minutes, Yoane Wissa missed two chances while City goalkeeper Ortega saved Bryan Mbeumo’s effort.
Despite the Bees early attacking foray, it was the Cityzens that found the breakthrough in the second half through Phil Foden, who slotted home off a fine assist from Kevin De Bruyne.
Foden made it 2-0 just 12 minutes later, as the England international tapped in a for a brace, pouncing on to the rebound after Savinho’s initial shot was saved.
But Brentford stormed back shortly after, as Mads Roerslev’s volleyed centre found Wissa all alone on the edge of the six-yard box to pull a goal back for the home side.
The night then ended in frustration for City as Christian Nørgaard headed home Keane Lewis-Potter’s right-wing cross just beyond the grasp of Stefan Ortega in stoppage time.
It could have been worse for City Frank Thomas’ men sought for a late winner and it took Nathan Aké’s goal line clearance from Bryan Mbeumo’s shot in the final moments to ensure Manchester City came away with a point.
The result leaves City with 35 points, behind Newcastle United on goal difference and two points off the top four as Chelsea needed a late Reece James goal to avoid defeat at home to Bournemouth.
