James Maddison has had himself a smashing 28th birthday celebration after scoring the opening two goals for Tottenham Hotspur in a shock 4-0 humiliation of Manchester City in a Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening.
The England midfielder got on the end of a Dejan Kulusevski cross into the City area to open the floodgate for Spurs after 13 minutes, before adding a second in the 20th minute after dinking the ball over Ederson in the City goal.
Spurs came close to scoring two more times before the half-time whistle spared Pep Guardiola’s men. But Ange Postecoglu’s side were not quite done with their hosts as seen in the ensuing second half.
Former Man. City trainee, Pedro Porro, made it 3-0 for the visitors seven minutes into the second half to all but seal a famous result for the Lilywhites.
Erling Haaland, quiet for a chunk of the match, came close to getting City back in it on the hour mark, only for the Premier League top scorer to see his effort crash off the crossbar.
Tottenham’s goalkeeper then made a fine stop to keep Ilkay Gundogan from getting one back for the Cityzens in the 76th minute, before denying Haaland three minutes later after the striker was set up by Kevin De Bruyne.
The visitors would go on to seal the win in the third minute of stoppage time through substitute, Brennan Johnson, who linked up with fellow sub, Timo Werner, to tap-in Spurs’ fourth and put the cherry on the cake.
The result lifts Spurs to sixth spot on the Premier League table with 19 points, while City remain second on 23 points. The champions, however, can fall eight points off the top if Liverpool win on Sunday against Southampton.
